La Spezia Container Terminal has restored full operational capacity of its berths and is preparing for a new phase of development.
The maintenance work on the Fornelli Est pier has been completed ahead of schedule, making it ready to accommodate new equipment and volumes.
La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT) announced the completion of the consolidation work on the Fornelli Est berth, restoring full operational capacity seven days ahead of the initial timeline. As of Sunday, March 16, LSCT resumed quay operations at Fornelli.
This achievement was made possible through close collaboration between the Eastern Ligurian Sea Port System Authority (AdSP) and LSCT, enabling rapid approvals and execution of the project in operational areas of the Fornelli Est pier.
The work, commissioned by AdSP and executed by Dott. Carlo Agnese S.p.A. based on a design by LSCT, involved filling cavities beneath the caisson bases with concrete. Steel sheet piles were installed for containment from the quay and later cut to size by divers working on the seabed. This operation is part of a routine maintenance plan agreed upon by AdSP and LSCT under the terminal concession. Beyond preserving existing infrastructure integrity, this project is strategically significant for future terminal development, preparing the area for new high-capacity cranes capable of efficiently handling next-generation Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs).
“Ensuring long-term competitiveness of quay operations is a priority for LSCT. This intervention is a fundamental step in enhancing our infrastructure, enabling us to proactively meet client needs, support container traffic growth, and expand the terminal,” said Alessandro Pellegri, COO of LSCT.

“We worked synergistically with LSCT Terminal and Dott. Carlo Agnese S.p.A. to ensure swift completion of the work and restoration of full quay operations. This was achieved thanks to the professionalism and dedication of all involved—AdSP, LSCT, contractors, and technicians—aware of its strategic importance in making La Spezia Port more attractive and competitive,”
Federica Montaresi, Extraordinary Commissioner of AdSP
Both Montaresi and Contship CEO Matthieu Gasselin extended special thanks to the executing company and all AdSP and LSCT technicians for their tireless efforts in achieving this goal.
