LSCT welcomes the Alva Maersk: new standards in port

The first Italian call of Maersk Line’s new dual-fuel container ship marks a step forward in innovation and environmental commitment

The Alva Maersk, the new Equinox-class container ship from the Maersk Line group, made its first call in Italy, arriving at the port of La Spezia on Sunday, April 27.

Launched in March 2025 and departing from Singapore, the vessel is completing its inaugural westbound rotation as part of the joint AE11 / SE2 service, which is integrated into the Gemini network. After docking at the Fornelli Pier, quayside operations began promptly in the morning and were completed as scheduled by the evening of April 28.

Measuring 351 meters in length and with a nominal capacity of 16,500 TEUs, this container ship is one of 18 dual-fuel vessels that will gradually join the Maersk Line fleet. It can run on methanol, biodiesel, and conventional fuel. Featuring an innovative design, the ship has its bridge and crew quarters at the bow, while a single funnel is positioned at the stern.

These design choices aim to optimize container capacity onboard and improve efficiency during port operations. The ship’s blue livery prominently displays the phrase “all the way to zero,” a visual statement of Maersk’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2040.

The call of Alva Maersk marks another milestone in the longstanding collaboration between the Contship Group and Maersk, united by a shared vision of innovation and sustainability.

On Monday, April 28, the traditional crest exchange ceremony took place aboard the ship, attended by Captain Alexandru Sofron, Angelo Ranieri (Customer Service, LSCT), and Mirko Leonardi (Head of Energy and Environment Department of the Eastern Ligurian Sea Port Authority). The event celebrated not only the vessel’s inaugural call but also the active cooperation among all stakeholders at the port of La Spezia.
