LSCT safely lifts 75ton yacht from water to container ship

Between 30 April and 2 May 2021, the Break Bulk & General Cargo Team of La Spezia Container Terminal undertook a very delicate operation – the loading of a Magellano yacht built by luxury Italian shipyard Azimut.

The yacht, 25 meters in length and weighing 75 tons, was lifted from the water with a hauling maneuver and then transferred onto the 15,000 TEU container ship Al Mashrab, destined for Hong Kong. The ship, operated by Hapag-Lloyd, is one of the eleven vessels deployed on THE Alliance’s MD2 service, connecting Asia with the Mediterranean.

The entire loading operation was completed in a single shift and followed a precise schedule, involving the use of mobile cranes, divers, and lashers, with eight LSCT operators directly engaged.

The mega yacht was berthed astern of the container ship and was lifted from the water using a mobile crane and special straps before being secured onto a dedicated support structure. Once safely loaded, the operation was finalized with specialized technicians applying a protective thermoplastic film over the hull.

LSCT has a long tradition of handling luxury yachts of all types and sizes, destined for locations all around the world: one of the many value-added services available to La Spezia Container Terminal customers.
