Inaugural call at La Spezia Container Terminal welcoming OOCL Indonesia
The arrival of the 21,000 TEU maxi-carrier, part of the WM1 service linking Asia and the Mediterranean, confirms the La Spezia terminal’s ability to handle large ships and its role as a primary gateway
The ship OOCL Indonesia, operated by Orient Overseas Container Line Limited (Hong Kong) and a member of Ocean Alliance, docked for its first call at the La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT), the Contship Italia Group’s gateway terminal in the Mediterranean.
One of six sister ships, with a length of 400 meters and a nominal capacity of 21,413 TEU, the OOCL Indonesia is a G-class ULCV, deployed within the Asia Med WM1 (AEM1, MEX2 or MD2) service.
The ship docked in the early afternoon of 17 July and saw LSCT’s operations teams begin operations immediately after docking, with onboard handling activities being completed the following day, as scheduled.
Following a long and established tradition, Captain Xiaosong Guo and his crew were given a warm welcome and were handed a commemorative crest, marking the first docking of OOCL Indonesia in the port of La Spezia. Present at the ceremony were Matteo Ferrando, Peter Robino of the Contship Italia commercial department, Alessandro Pellegri – COO of La Spezia Container Terminal, together with Stephen Rosso, Operations Manager of OOCL Italy, and Giorgia Bucchioni, owner of the Agenzia Marittima Lardon and president of the Port of La Spezia’s Maritime Agents Association.
La Spezia Container Terminal, the Contship Italia Group’s gateway terminal, thus continues its growth path, confirming a positive trend of 14% for the first 6 months of the year; the company is continuing its organizational transformation, which began in 2023 and will culminate with the start of the terminal renovation process. From January to June 2024, 544,810 total TEUs were handled, marking an increase of 12% if compared to the same period last year.
