Hannibal boosts its intermodal logistics with a new Melzo-Marcianise connection
The Contship Group’s MTO announces the start of a new service that will connect northern and southern Italy
Hannibal, the multimodal transport operator of the Contship Italia Group, announces the launch of the new Melzo Marcianise connection, operating from 3 December 2024. This service represents a step forward in the development strategy of intermodal logistics in the area, offering an innovative and sustainable solution to connect Northern and Southern Italy.
The Melzo Marcianise connection includes two weekly round trips between the Milan Rail Hub in Melzo and the Marcianise-Maddaloni terminal. Departures from Melzo are scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while those from Marcianise will take place on Wednesdays and Fridays. From the first quarter of 2025, an increase in frequency to three connections per week is planned, to meet the growing demand for efficient and sustainable transport.
With a capacity of 32 units per train, the service will accept all types of containers thanks to the use of low-loading wagons. Rail traction will be provided by Oceanogate, the Contship Group operator specializing in rail freight transport. This new development consolidates Rail Hub Milan’s position as a strategic gateway to Northern Europe and the main Mediterranean ports, further strengthening the Contship Group’s intermodal logistics network.
Andrea Spagnuolo, Sales & Business Development Manager at Contship Italia, said: ‘With the new Melzo Marcianise connection we can offer transport solutions tailored to our customers’ needs. Our flexibility in transporting a wide range of units and our value-added services, such as storage and transshipment of goods on trucks, allows us to adapt to the specific requirements of each shipment. Furthermore, we can complement the offer by providing efficient customs operations with containers on the ground, as well as first and last-mile transports by truck‘.
This new project not only enriches Hannibal’s offer but also confirms the Contship Group’s role as a reference partner for companies wishing to optimize their logistics flows. With its focus on innovation and sustainability, the Melzo-Marcianise link becomes a concrete example of how intermodal logistics can contribute to the decarbonization of the sector and improve transport efficiency in Italy.
