La Spezia Container Terminal partners with the fire department for an extraordinary exercise

Two days of training and simulations to manage port emergencies and improve the operational safety of rescue operations

La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT) recently collaborated with the fire brigade command to conduct two major rescue simulations to strengthen operational readiness in emergencies.

The exercises, held inside our terminal, aimed to test and improve internal safety procedures by simulating real-life emergencies in complex settings, such as the need to rescue a crane operator taken ill in a maneuvering cab at 40 meters.

“The safety of all our people and operators working inside the terminal is our main goal. This collaboration with the Fire Department is important to ensure that the personnel in charge are ready to deal with even these types of emergencies competently and promptly, anticipating any rescue needs with ad hoc training directly in the field,” said Ermanno Gianelli, Health, Safety, & Environment Manager at La Spezia Container Terminal. “Knowing the Terminal’s environment also allows the safety operators to act efficiently and consciously, better planning the intervention.”

The rescue operation at 40mt was conducted by the S.A.F. (Speleo-Alpino-Fluviale) Unit of the Provincial Command, which stabilized the operator and, using speleo-mountaineering techniques, lowered him safely to the ground. Crucially, the support of the regional S.A.P.R. (Sistemi Aeromobili a Pilotaggio Remoto) Unit, which carried out a preliminary inspection of the scenario using drones, providing rescuers with a complete view of the situation, as well as carrying essential rescue equipment, thus speeding up “rescue” operations.
