Hannibal: a new intermodal service launched between Milan and Trieste
Hannibal’s European railway network continues to grow and becomes increasingly interconnected and integrated
The new railway service connecting the HHLA PLT terminal in Trieste with the Contship Italia Group’s Rail Hub Milano Melzo was officially launched on 18 April.
This new train service, intended for semi-trailers, sea containers and any other equipment, will be operated as an open rail system.
The intermodal connection will run 3 times a week during its initial phase, with the plan to increase to daily connections by the end of 2023. The new service has been added to the over 45 weekly connections available on the national territory and onwards to Northern Europe through the network of Hannibal and its partners. Rail traction is entrusted to Oceanogate, a company of Contship Italia group.
The project was developed in collaboration with Francesco Parisi Casa di Spedizioni and Alpe Adria that will manage the the operational and commercial liaison with the stakeholders of the Trieste Terminal.
“I am happy to announce this important news for our Group” commented Cristiano Pieragnolo, Managing Director of Hannibal. “The new link is strategic as it allows us to offer greater capacity for all traffic from/to Turkey. In fact, over 60% of Turkey’s import/export flows pass through the Trieste Terminal and thanks to this connection we will better integrate maritime and continental flows. Not only that, it also demonstrates the Contship Italia Group’s commitment towards an increasingly sustainable logistics thanks to the development of road-rail transport and the consequent reduction of the impact generated by our activities”.
